There is a version of this article that tells you one is categorically better than the other. This is not that article.

The honest answer is that online yoga and in-studio yoga each do something the other cannot. Which one is right for you depends on factors that have nothing to do with quality — and everything to do with your life.

At Absolute Yoga in Kalyan Nagar, we run both. We have watched students thrive exclusively online and others who tried online and came into the studio and said, “now I understand what I was missing.” Both experiences are real. Here is how to think about them clearly.

What In-Studio Yoga Gives You That Online Cannot

Physical correction in real time

This is the most significant difference, and it is not small. When a teacher can see your body from multiple angles — and can place a hand on your lower back, lift your shoulders slightly, or press your knee into alignment — something shifts that no verbal cue through a screen can fully replicate.

Alignment errors that a student has been repeating for months are often invisible to them. They feel correct because they are familiar. A teacher in the room notices what the student cannot feel. This is particularly important in standing poses, inversions, and any posture that loads the spine.

The quality of the room

A properly equipped yoga studio — with a clean mat surface, adequate space, temperature control, and the absence of household distractions — creates a container for practice that is genuinely difficult to replicate at home. At Absolute Yoga in HRBR Layout, students frequently comment that they can go deeper into their practice at the studio simply because nothing in the room is asking for their attention.

Community and accountability

An in-person class is a collective energy of the students and the teachers. In days when your energy is not high you can draw from the energy of the other students and teachers. When you see other students put in effort even when it's not easy for them...this motivation can boost your own practice.

What Online Yoga Gives You That In-Studio Cannot

Genuine flexibility

Yoga is so life changing for your body and mind that you cannot help but tell people how it's has completely changed you for the better and improved your health. Our online students are a collection of friends and relatives who have seen the benefits of our studio students and wanted to get the same for themselves. We have people joining our classes from various parts of the country and from other countries too. It's a real no barrier experience.

A 2021 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that practitioners who switched to online yoga during restricted periods maintained practice frequency at 78% of their pre-restriction rate — significantly higher than those who required a physical location.

Privacy

This matters more than people admit. Many beginners feel self-conscious in a group class when they are new, carrying extra weight, managing an injury, or simply have never done yoga before. Online practice, especially in a small live class with a teacher who knows you, offers a lower-barrier entry into consistent practice.

Consistency across travel or schedule disruptions

Students who travel frequently for work find that online access means their practice does not pause every time they are in a different city. The teacher, the approach, and the sequence remain continuous.

The Hybrid Approach — What Most Serious Students Actually Do

At Absolute Yoga, the majority of long-term students combine both. A typical pattern looks like this:

  1. Two to three in-studio sessions per week for alignment correction and the benefit of the physical environment
  2. One to two online sessions on days when the commute is not possible
  3. Weekend in-studio for longer or specialised sessions (Classical Yoga, Aerial)

Your studio pass at Absolute Yoga unlocks access to both formats. You do not choose one and commit to it exclusively.

How to Decide Where to Start

The right teaching is the key. If commuting to the studio is not feasible, start moderate classes online 1-2 classes a week and then move onto more sessions weekly. Make sure you spend some time with the teacher to describe your health conditions and set up your mats in a way yeh teacher can see you well. Buying a set of basic props like blocks and straps will be very helpful

If you have an established practice and a scheduling constraint: online is a strong option. The teacher-student relationship and the correction dynamic are preserved well in a small live class.

If you are returning after an injury or managing a health condition: in-studio, always. The level of personalised observation required is higher.

What Makes Our Online Classes Different

At Absolute Yoga, we believe that online yoga should be more than just following along with a screen. Our classes are designed to create a supportive, engaging, and transformative experience that helps students build a sustainable yoga practice from the comfort of their homes.

Personalised Attention, Real Progress

Unlike large online yoga classes, our small batch sizes allow teachers to actively observe, guide, and support every student. With personalised corrections, a strong community, and a holistic approach that includes asana, meditation, Yin Yoga, and Vinyasa, we help you build a consistent practice and achieve meaningful progress.

Small Batch Sizes

Our classes are intentionally kept small so every student receives personalised attention. This creates a more supportive learning environment and helps you progress with confidence.

Instruction-Led Teaching

Our teachers actively observe, guide, and correct students throughout the session. This hands-on approach ensures safer practice and better alignment in every posture.

Strong Student Community

Many of our students have been practising with us for years. Being part of a committed community helps build consistency, motivation, and long-term growth.

Holistic Yoga Practice

We offer a balanced mix of Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, meditation, prop-based sessions, and traditional asana practice. This variety supports both physical well-being and mental wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to get real alignment correction in an online yoga class?

Yes — in a small live class where the teacher can see you via camera. The correction is verbal rather than hands-on, but an experienced teacher watching your posture in real time can identify and cue most alignment issues effectively. This is different from a recorded video class, where no correction is possible.

What do I need at home for an online yoga class?

A non-slip mat, a space of roughly 6x4 feet, stable internet, and a device with a camera that can show your full body. Two yoga blocks are helpful but not essential. Good lighting helps the teacher see you clearly.

Can I switch between online and in-studio on different days?

Yes. At Absolute Yoga, your membership gives you access to both formats. Many students attend in-studio two or three times a week and use online sessions on days when they cannot make the commute to Kalyan Nagar.
