What is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial Yoga — also called hammock yoga or anti-gravity yoga — uses a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling to support the body in traditional yoga postures, inversions, and stretches.

Unlike mat-based yoga, aerial yoga uses gravity to your advantage. The hammock takes the compression off your joints, allowing your spine to decompress naturally. This makes it particularly effective for students with lower back pain, stiffness, or those who struggle with weight-bearing inversions on the mat.

At Absolute Yoga, we teach aerial yoga the right way — not as a circus act, but as a genuine, breath-led yoga practice that builds strength, flexibility, and calm.

8 Benefits of Aerial Yoga

01

Spinal Decompression

The hammock allows the spine to elongate under gravity, relieving compression between vertebrae. Students with chronic lower back pain often notice relief after just a few sessions.

02

Inversions from Day One

Headstands and shoulder stands that take months on the mat become safely accessible in aerial yoga from your very first class, with the hammock supporting your full body weight.

03

Full-Body Strength

Holding positions in the hammock engages your core, arms, and legs in ways mat yoga cannot replicate. The gentle instability means your stabilising muscles are always engaged.

04

Deeper Flexibility & Mobility

Gravity-assisted stretching allows a greater range of motion with less strain. Hip openers, hamstring stretches, and chest openers become more accessible than on a mat.

05

Reduced Joint Compression

For students with knee pain, wrist issues, or hip stiffness, aerial yoga removes the weight-bearing demands of many postures — an excellent complement to therapeutic yoga.

06

Balance & Body Awareness

The gentle instability of the hammock sharpens proprioception — your sense of where your body is in space — faster than mat practice alone. Posture and coordination both improve.

07

Deep Stress Relief

The aerial savasana — wrapping yourself in the hammock at the end of class — is one of the most deeply relaxing experiences in any yoga practice. Students consistently call it their favourite part.

08

Accessible to All Ages

We have students in their 20s and students in their 60s attending aerial yoga at our Bangalore studio. Fitness level is not a prerequisite — willingness to try is.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Aerial Yoga in Bangalore

Is aerial yoga good for beginners?
Yes — absolutely. Many of our aerial yoga students in Bangalore come with zero prior yoga experience and take to it naturally. The hammock supports your body weight, making postures and inversions accessible from your very first session. We begin every class from the basics, no experience assumed. You can also complement aerial with our online yoga classes.
Is aerial yoga safe for people with back pain?
Aerial yoga is often beneficial for lower back pain because the hammock decompresses the spine — relieving compression that builds up from sitting or standing for long hours. However, if you have a recent injury, disc herniation, or have been advised by a doctor to avoid inversions, please consult them first and inform your instructor before class. We adapt every session individually.
Do I need to be flexible or strong to start aerial yoga?
No. The hammock helps you access a range of motion that flexibility alone cannot provide. Stiffness is not a barrier — it is often a reason to come. Students of all fitness levels and body types practise aerial yoga at our HRBR Layout studio in Bangalore.
What is the aerial yoga price at Absolute Yoga Bangalore?
Aerial yoga starts at ₹250 per class for active Absolute Yoga members, and ₹500 per class for non-members. Monthly (₹800/members, ₹2,000/non-members), quarterly, and 6-month add-on packages are available. WhatsApp us at +91 80955 10108 for a full breakdown.
How is aerial yoga different from regular yoga?
Regular yoga is performed on a mat using body weight. Aerial yoga uses a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling, enabling gravity-assisted inversions, deeper stretches, and spinal decompression that are not achievable on the mat. The breath, mindfulness, and awareness remain central — the tools are different. Read about our teaching philosophy →
What should I wear to an aerial yoga class?
Wear fitted clothing that covers your underarms and the back of your knees — this prevents the hammock fabric from digging into bare skin. Avoid loose T-shirts, clothing with zippers or metal buckles, and jewellery. Leggings and a fitted top work perfectly.
Can I try one class before committing to a membership?
Yes. Non-member drop-in classes are available at ₹500 per session. Contact us on WhatsApp at +91 80955 10108 to check slot availability and reserve your hammock before coming.
