Yoga (योग), an ancient practice rooted in Indian philosophy, has evolved into a practice followed and revered globally for enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. While traditional Yoga encompasses a broad spectrum of practices for spiritual awakening, modern Yoga classes often emphasize āsanas (आसन) (physical postures) for their proven health benefits.
At Absolute Yoga, we understand that the variety of Yoga styles can be overwhelming for newcomers. You might wonder: "Why are there so many types if the goal is the same?" and "Which style is right for me?" Let's demystify the world of Yoga styles and help you find your perfect match.
First, a quick clarification: When we talk about 'Yoga' in this context, we're primarily referring to āsana practice. Most contemporary Yoga classes cater to those seeking fitness or relief from specific health concerns. While āsana’s are the core focus, many classes incorporate basic breathing exercises and moments of meditation or quiet reflection.
The 'styles' or 'types' of Yoga classes you'll encounter are essentially different approaches to teaching āsana’s. These variations typically differ in:
Pace
Intensity
Sequencing of poses
Use of props
It's important to note that all these styles have their roots in Haṭha Yoga. While classical texts describe only 84 āsana’s, the practice in modern Yoga classes includes numerous preparatory movements, variations, and modifications to suit diverse needs and abilities.
With so many options, how do you decide which style is right for you? The key is to consider your individual factors:
Age
Current fitness level
Personal goals
Any existing health conditions
At Absolute Yoga, we offer a range of classes to cater to all levels and preferences. Here's a quick guide to help you navigate our offerings:
1. Haṭha Yoga: The Foundation
Haṭha (हठ) Yoga, traditionally encompassing all eight limbs of Yoga, has been adapted for modern classes. In our Haṭha Yoga sessions, we focus on a methodical approach where there's a pause after every posture. Students return to 'samasthiti' or the neutral position to experience the effects of each āsana. We intentionally curate our Haṭha Yoga classes to include a comprehensive range of movements: all spinal directions, open and close-ended postures, and a mix of standing, seated, prone, supine, and inverted positions.
This holistic approach offers numerous benefits, including hormonal health regulation, improved strength and mobility, enhanced spinal function, and better breathing techniques. The pace and intensity can be tailored to suit both beginners and advanced practitioners, making Haṭha Yoga accessible to all ages and adaptable for various physical conditions.
For optimal results, Haṭha Yoga can be practiced daily. It pairs well with a weekly high-intensity class (Yoga or another form of fitness) and a restorative or prāṇāyāma-intensive session. Our Haṭha classes incorporate breath awareness and include dedicated prāṇāyāma practice, providing a well-rounded Yoga experience.
2. Yoga with Props: Precision and Accessibility
This style, inspired by the teachings of Yogācārya B.K.S. Iyengar, utilizes props to enhance the Yoga practice. Common props include Yoga blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets, and walls. At Absolute Yoga, we've expanded our prop repertoire to include Yoga chairs, ropes, and Yoga wheels.
Practicing with props serves two primary purposes: it makes postures more accessible and supported for those who might struggle otherwise and helps correct alignment, allowing for longer holds and strength building. A typical 'Yoga with Props' class features fewer postures but longer hold times, enabling practitioners to fully experience and benefit from each āsana.
This style can be adapted for beginners or those with limited flexibility, using props for support. At Absolute Yoga, we also offer advanced sessions that use props to deepen the practice, exploring more complex movements and extended hold times. This approach is particularly beneficial for experienced students looking to refine their alignment and advance their practice.
We recommend practicing Yoga with props once or twice a week, as it involves intense muscle engagement. It's beneficial to balance this style with rest days or restorative Yoga practices.
3. Vinyāsa: Dynamic Flow
Vinyāsa (विन्यास), which translates to "flow," offers a dynamic and continuous movement style of Yoga. Inspired by the Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa lineage, this practice strings postures together in fluid sequences, emphasizing the synergy between breath and movement.
Developed to appeal to younger practitioners and compete with more intense forms of physical workouts, Vinyāsa (also known as Power Yoga) channels high energy through fast-paced movements. It's an excellent way to build stamina and strength while providing a solid cardio workout.
At Absolute Yoga, we honor the practice's roots while allowing for creative sequencing. Our Vinyāsa classes maintain a focus on breath awareness and include hold times for postures, incorporating only traditional āsanas and their variations.
Due to its intensity, Vinyāsa is not typically suitable for complete beginners or those with significant mobility issues as stability is required to move fast. It can be practiced a few times a week, but we recommend balancing it with styles that offer longer holds, prāṇāyāma, and restorative elements for a well-rounded practice.
4. Prāṇāyāma and Meditation: Breath and Mind
Our Prāṇāyāma (प्राणायम) and Meditation classes focus on breath work and mindfulness practices. These sessions typically begin with a brief āsana practice to release physical energy blocks, preparing the body for deeper breathwork and meditation.
As beginners often find extended periods of silence or breath awareness challenging, we start with short 5-10 minute prāṇāyāma sessions. Advanced practitioners are encouraged to gradually increase their practice duration, working towards longer breath control and meditation periods.
At Absolute Yoga, we offer various prāṇāyāma-focused classes, allowing students to incorporate this essential practice at least once a week. Our instructors tailor the prāṇāyāma techniques to suit the climate, season, lunar cycles, and individual health conditions or practice levels of the participants.
5. Yin Yoga: Deep Restoration
Developed in the late 1970s, Yin Yoga combines Haṭha Yoga āsanas with Taoist principles and the Chinese system of meridians. This restorative and calming style involves holding postures for extended periods with a passive approach, promoting deep tissue healing and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
Yin Yoga can be challenging for beginners due to the long hold times, so we recommend some basic Haṭha Yoga experience before trying this style. It's an excellent restorative practice, ideal for 1-2 sessions per week as a complement to more active styles. Yin Yoga is also effective in targeted workshops for injury recovery or stress relief.
However, it's important to note that while Yin Yoga offers significant benefits, it shouldn't be the sole practice for those seeking physical fitness or strength building. It works best as part of a balanced Yoga regimen.
At Absolute Yoga, we're dedicated to helping you craft a Yoga practice that aligns perfectly with your individual needs and aspirations. Our experienced instructors are always on hand to guide you towards a combination of styles that resonates with your body and mind.
